Important Immigration Updates for this Week

Liza Lieberman, Associate Director, Policy and Advocacy, HIAS

This week the Senate Judiciary Committee will begin the markup of the bipartisan comprehensive immigration bill, S.744. We expect the amendments to be filed on Tuesday (May 7th) and then the committee will begin to consider the amendments on Thursday (May 9th) with additional markups on May 14th, 16th, and 20th-24th. We will need all hands on deck to urge legislators to either support or oppose amendments. If you have not already done so, please click here to sign up for the We Were Strangers, Too listserv so that you will receive action alerts when we need you to weigh in with your legislators.

Also, this bill includes significant, much-needed reforms to protections for refugees, asylum seekers, stateless persons, and other vulnerable migrants. This is a major opportunity to see these reforms enacted into law - and we need to ensure that our elected officials will defend them! We are circulating several state-specific letters of support for these provisions, and we are seeking sign-ons from faith-based, humanitarian, and human rights organizations and leaders. It's a quick turn-around - the deadline for all letters is Tuesday, May 7th at 5pm EST. Please sign on as an individual or organization (if applicable), and help us widely circulate the following letters:

California
Texas
South Carolina
